Rating : 4/5
Pros: Good plot, Good acting for an upcoming star Jack’O Connel and first time actor Mutsuhiro Watanabe.
Cons: Lack of character development, lack of more insights about the life of Louis Zamperini.
Directed by Angelina Jolie, Unbroken tells an incredible story about an Olympian Louis Zamperini, who later fought in WW2. After his plane crashed, fighting for survival, he spends a harrowing 47 days in a raft with two other crews before getting caught by the Japanese navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.
Clocking at 140 minutes, it’s a pretty long movie. Nevertheless an inspirational story. It starts off with Louis being a small and rebellious child who fights, smokes and drinks. As he ran away to avoid getting caught, he was spotted by his brother then an athlete. He saw Louis’s potential and trained him from that day on. Eventually, he won the Olympics.
The focus then skips to how Louis was on a mission to rescue those who did not return after the bombing of japan, but in the end his plane crashed into the ocean due to a fault. He fought to survive in the ocean along with 2 other surviving crew members.
On day 47 after the crash they were captured by the Japanese navy and thereafter brought to a prisoner-of-war camp. There he met the camp commander, Mutsuhiro Watanabe, who tortured him along with the other prisoners.
The rest? Watch it yourself!!
In my opinion the movie was inspirational in a way it simply depicts the “fight for what you believe in” attitude. It was truly amazing as after watching the film I did a research on Louis Zamperini, he actually when back to Japan after all the ordeal he went thru and forgave all who tortured him. It was heartening to see how great a man he is. It is hard for us humans to forgive those who brought us pain, but for those who forgive that’s when they really find peace.
Another thing I’ve learned from the movie is that A MOMENT OF PAIN IS WORTH A LIFETIME OF GLORY. The quote says it all, truly inspirational.
